Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML)

Leukemia is a cancer of the marrow & blood that develops in the blood stem cells. Leukemia develops when blood stem cells in the bone marrow change & no longer grow or behave normally. The leukemia cells begin to crowd out normal blood cells. There are 4 major types of leukemia: acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL), acute myeloid leukemia (AML), chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and chronic myeloid leukemia (CML).

Signs & Symptoms: 

Fatigue, malaise, loss of appetite, weight loss, fever, anemia, shortness of breath, paleness, palpitations,  weakness, dizziness, easy bruising, frequent or severe nose bleeds, bleeding gums, mid-cycle or heavy menstrual flow, red spots on the skin (petechiae), frequent infections, pneumonia, urinary tract infection, cold sores, vomiting, headache, sore throat, night sweats, bone or joint pain, enlarged lymph nodes in the neck, underarm, groin or above the collarbone, abdominal discomfort or feeling of fullness, vision problems and sores in the eyes.

Treatment:

There are different types of treatment for adult acute myeloid leukemia. The treatment of adult AML usually has 2 phases.Treatment depends on the type of Leukemia but doctors usually suggest Chemotherapy, Radiation &/or Stem cell transplant. New types of treatments are continually being tested in clinical trials. Hematologist are also using Targeted therapy. Patients may want to think about taking part in a clinical trial. Patients can enter clinical trials before, during, or after starting their cancer treatment.

    1. Currently taking Jakavi and Rezurok daily. I’ve felt a great improvement in my skin over the past year. Still not 100% but the tightness in my chest is gone! Will post an update soon.
